Elderberry Delight

An Immunity Oxymel

At some point in our lives, we will all catch a cold or the flu or something similar. There are some things we can do to prevent it and there are some things we can do to shorten the duration of illness. This is where Elderberry Delight comes in. This is not your standard Elderberry syrup, this is my unique adaptation to take a standard syrup and turn it into a wellness drink.

Elderberries (Sambucas canadensis) have been used for centuries to assist the immune system in keeping our natural defenses strong and also lending a helping hand while in the throes of illness. It is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, while also being high in Vitamins A, C, and B6. It is the go-to plant for colds and flu because it can boost the immune system, soothe a sore throat and cough, encourage a sweat (very helpful with a fever), and reduce inflammation.

Ginger Root (Zingiber officinalis) increases the flow of saliva and stimulates our digestive juices, and warms the body. As a carminative, it does wonders for gas, bloating, and nausea. It is also a strong antiviral and antibacterial plant.

An adaptogenic herb, Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a potent anti-inflammatory, mild natural laxative, and expectorant. The adaptogenic qualities make it perfect for the added stress we feel when we are ill. This plant has many other benefits as well which include soothing heartburn and acid reflux, calms PMS and menopause symptoms, is an antispasmodic, antiviral, and expectorant.

Another well-known immune health plant is Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea). Its antiviral qualities are what it is best known for. From colds to cancer, this plant has been used for many imbalances. Echinacea can also soothe pain, lower inflammation, improve mental health, and of course combat upper respiratory issues.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum aromaticum) is often used in elderberry recipes for taste but also for added potency. High in antioxidants and can be antibacterial and antifungal, this bark is very helpful for lowering inflammation, protecting from free radicals, protecting the heart, and fighting infections.

Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) is one of the best-known herbs for lung health. This plant is great for the lungs and upper respiratory system because it is a demulcent and expectorant. Demulcents are substances that calm irritation or inflammation in the skin or internal parts of the nose, mouth, or throat. Expectorants are for stimulating the production or secretion of phlegm, which lends a helping hand to coughs. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, this powerhouse plant is ideal for colds, flu, asthma, and general congestion.

In this blend, there is also honey and Apple Cider Vinegar. Both of these have long been used as a preservative. Honey is also wonderful for coating the throat and making preparations more palatable. The probiotics and enzymes of ACV alone make it wonderful for us but it can also reduce the duration of colds, help cleanse the lymph nodes, and boosts our gut health (where a lot of illnesses and diseases lie).

All products sit in their menstruum (extracting liquid) for 4-6 weeks to ensure a proper, full extraction. This is a traditional folk method that has been used for thousands of years to slowly extract the most from your plant material.

There are many ways to take this preparation. For prevention, take 1-2 tablespoons a day. For acute illness, take 2-4 tablespoons a day. You can take it straight or mix it into a drink and make a cocktail or mocktail.
